Running into 2017

Running into 2017

January 1, 2017

If you think it’s difficult to hold to your resolution to get more exercise in the New Year, imagine what it’s like to do so in Antarctica. MIT-WHOI Joint Program graduate student Laura Stevens recently traveled to McMurdo Station, the U.S. research base on Ross Island, Antarctica, to retrieve some instruments for WHOI seismologist Ralph Stephen. While there, Stevens found the will to maintain her training regimen for the 2017 Boston Marathon by running in the hills around the base. She even participated in a 5k “fun run” on Thanksgiving between the U.S. and New Zealand research bases. (Photo by Laura Stevens, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
