One Last Look

November 4, 2017

An ice-tethered profiler (ITP) takes one last look at the sky before passing through four meters of ice in the Beaufort Sea to begin a study of ocean physics, biology, and chemistry beneath the sea ice led by WHOI biologist Sam Laney. Deployed in summer 2011, this instrument and its companion became the first ITPs to return daily information on the vertical structure of under-ice phytoplankton in the Arctic Ocean. ITPs were developed at WHOI by physical oceanographer John Toole and a team of engineers and technicians that included Rick Krishfield and Steve Lambert and are an integral part of the National Science Foundation’s Arctic Observing Network (AON).
