Measuring Wave Energy

Measuring Wave Energy

May 8, 2018

MIT-WHOI Joint Program graduate students Lizzie Wallace (left) and Rose Palermo prepare to deploy tiltmeters to measure the current produced by waves in Whale Bay, Bermuda, as part of a Field Sedimentology course. Wallace and Palermo are trying to determine the wave energy in embayments that have undergone dramatic changes over the last several years. Tiltmeters are often used by geophysicists to measure small movements on land or in the seafloor. The WHOI Coastal Systems Group also uses them to measure waves produced by hurricanes and other large storms. (Photo by Kristin Bergmann, MIT EAPS)
