I Can See Clearly Now

March 26, 2014

Nathan Brown, an Alvin pilot-in-training, cleans a viewport on the sub in the early-morning hours before Alvin was launched from research vessel Atlantis into the Gulf of Mexico on March 15, 2014. It would be the sub’s first scientific dive after a 39-month hiatus and a major overhaul that dramatically upgraded its abilities—and Brown’s first dive in the sub. He, Pilot Bob Waters, and WHOI scientist Susan Humphris spent five hours at the seafloor testing Alvin’s new propulsion, command-and-control, and imaging systems. Read more about Alvin’s return to service at the cruise blog. (Photo by Chris Linder, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
