Synchronized Floating

August 27, 2012

Instructor Joe Mokry (left) of Ocean Rescue Systems International teaches students in a boat safety course at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution strategies for staying alive should they ever have to abandon ship. The students are wearing buoyant suits that keep them warm, dry, and afloat. They have linked their feet and arms to form a human chain that enables them to stay together. That will keep everyone accounted for and provide a larger visual target for searchers to find. Scientists must take the safety course before using vessels from WHOI’s small boat fleet in support of their research.(Photo by Keith Bradley, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
