Grabbing Hands-on Experience

Grabbing Hands-on Experience

July 28, 2017

Every summer, the WHOI Summer Student Fellowship (SSF) program and the Woods Hole Partnership Education Program (PEP) bring undergraduates to WHOI to learn more about ocean science. The students attend lectures by scientists and conduct field work with world-class researchers. Traditionally, the students take a ride on WHOI’s coastal vessel Tioga to experience firsthand a variety of oceanographic instruments and sampling methods. Here, WHOI researcher Phil Alatalo (left) instructs SSF Jeanette Gray (Unity College) and PEP student Craig Dawes (New York City College of Technology) as they deploy a Van Veen grab sampler to collect bottom sediment from Buzzards Bay.
