Armed and Ready to Sample

Frieder Klein, Sean Sylva, Jeff Seewald, Jill McDermott, and Eoghan Reeves (left to right) were the team responsible for collecting and analyzing samples of hydrothermal vent fluids (Jason pilot Scott Hansen peeks out from the background) on the cruise. Seewald developed the samplers to collect fluids, some exceeding 700°F, and return them to the surface under pressure to preserve their physical and chemical composition. The instruments were also used to collect oil samples from the blown-out Gulf of Mexico well in 2010.(Photo by Julie Huber)
