A Seagoing Tradition Comes to a Close

A Seagoing Tradition Comes to a Close

November 5, 2017

The family of A.D. Colburn waved good-bye from the end of the WHOI dock as R/V Atlantis departed on AD’s final trip as master of the ship recently. The son of Arthur D. Colburn Jr., the last captain of WHOI’s original Atlantis, A.D. has ships, and WHOI, in his blood. From a boy on a boat with his dad, to a cadet, to second mate on R/V Knorr, and finally captain of R/V Atlantis, A.D. has had a long and memorable career helping scientists and engineers from around the world make their research a reality. Everyone at WHOI wishes him well on his next adventures whether they be on land or sea. (Photo by Ken Kostel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
