A match made in academia

February 14, 2009

In 1968, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announced the creation of a joint program for graduate studies in oceanography. After 40 years together, the marriage is still going strong. The first MIT-WHOI Joint Program commencement occurred in Woods Hole in 1970 (the 1980 commencement is shown here). In June 2008, the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography/Applied Ocean Science and Engineering awarded its 800th degree. Read more about the joint program in the recent issue of Oceanus magazine.
