SUMMARY:WOODS HOLE PUBLIC LIBRARY
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, July 21\, at 7 pm\, the library will screen a documentary on Carmen de Lavallade and Geoffrey Holder\, two living legends in the world of American dance. Carmen achieved notoriety in the early 1950s\, as a lead dancer of incomparable beauty and grace with Alvin Ailey’s American Dance Theater. Geoffrey\, large in life and an elemental force on stage\, found fame not only as a dancer but also as an actor\, soda spokesman and theater director. He and Carmen met in 1954 and married a year later. This exquisite documentary features candid interviews and glorious dance performances\, with legends like Alvin Ailey\, Herbert Ross\, Lester Horton\, Joe Layton\, Duke Ellington and Josephine Baker\, demonstrating the amazing talent and uninterrupted creativity of these icons of dance. This screening is part of the Woods Hole Public Library’s summer Lassalle Dance series. All are welcome to attend.

SUMMARY:THE WOODS HOLE FILM FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:The 35th Woods Hole Film Festival\, “Bold Films\, Bright Futures: 35 Years of Films That Matter\,” kicks off Saturday\, July 25\, running for eight exciting days through Saturday\, August 1. With feature-length and short films from around the world\, engaging Q&As with filmmakers\, a master class\, panel discussions\, a workshop\, unforgettable live music parties\, and an awards ceremony\, this year’s Festival offers something for everyone. In celebration of the 35th year\, 40 festival alums\, several of whom have gone on to become Oscar winners or nominees after their films screened at the festival\, are either returning with their latest films or leading workshops and participating in panel discussions. As the longest-running film festival on Cape Cod and the Islands—and one of the oldest in New England—the Woods Hole Film Festival has long championed emerging\, independent filmmakers\, especially those with ties to the region. This year’s selections were narrowed down to an exciting presentation of independent cinema\, with 127 films from 23 countries\, including 9 World\, 2 North American\, and 51 New England premieres by both first-time and veteran filmmakers. The festival’s thematic strands include films and filmmakers from New England—particularly Massachusetts\, including Cape Cod and the Islands—films about music and musicians\, and films about science and the environment in conjunction with the festival’s “Bringing Science to the Screen” program. The festival’s intimate seaside setting allows for meaningful conversations between filmmakers and audiences—whether during post-film Q&As\, as well as on the street. For tickets\, passes and film descriptions visit https://woodshole.elevent.io/browse-events.

SUMMARY:WOODS HOLE PUBLIC LIBRARY
DESCRIPTION:Professor\, author\, and Woods Hole local Daniel Isenberg will talk about his newest work\, This Book is Not For You: My Loss\, My Grief\, My Healing on Tuesday\, July 28\, at 3 pm at the library. In this personal and poignant book\, Isenberg recounts the loss of his wife after a four-year battle with cancer. It is a uniquely honest and intimate look into his experience through the time leading up to his loss and in the months after. Though the subject matter is difficult\, readers have described the book as “powerful\, beautiful\, painful\, resonant\, and vivid.” The library is once again celebrating the creativity of our community with a Summer Community Art Project featuring original works made by local artists. This summer\, artists and makers were invited to create a piece using cork (as in wine bottles\, flooring tiles\, and more!) as a common medium. This vibrant display of imagination and craftsmanship will be on display at the library beginning on July 20 and will culminate in a silent auction on Thursday\, July 30\, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. The public is invited to view the art in the library leading up to the event and to join in the auction to bid on their favorite creations. All proceeds from the silent auction will directly benefit the Woods Hole Public Library\, supporting its ongoing programs\, services\, and community initiatives. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate local talent\, support the library\, and perhaps bring home a piece of original cork-inspired art. Light refreshments will be served during the event. \n
