June 27, 2020 @ 8:00 am

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 8:00 am, repeating until June 28, 2020

On Saturday, June 27, 2020 the Woods Hole Film Festival presents a virtual screening event of the award-winning (Best of the Fest, WHFF 2019) feature documentary RUNNER followed by an online Q&A with the director Bill Gallagher and the film’s subject, Guor Mading Maker

Originally slated for inclusion in the Woods Hole Film Festival’s Dinner & A Movie film series, the film will now be presented as part of Festival shift to hosting virtual screening events necessitated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Virtual screening events include an opportunity to view curated independent films and to participate in live Q&A’s with the filmmakers and other special guests.  Says Judith Laster, Festival Director, “As we adapt to the reality of the new environment we’re in, the Woods Hole Film Festival is undertaking a major effort to shift the Woods Hole Film Festival and year-round screenings to be held as a virtual event. We intend the Festival to have the look and feel of the eight day Woods Hole Film Festival we’ve presented for the past 28 years. The 29th Woods Hole Film Festival, July 25 – August 1st , will consist of the same type of screenings and events we offer at the in-person festival and reflect the community-based feel of the Festival. This year’s Festival will feature nearly 180 films from around the world and we are thrilled to present this amazing lineup. Festival passes are on sale now at www.woodsholefilmfestival.org.”

About the Film:

RUNNER by Bill Gallagher, Documentary Feature |2019| USA|120 mins.

ABOUT THE FILM
When he was only eight, Guor Mading Maker (known as Guor Marial) ran from capture in war-torn Sudan to eventually seek safety in the US. In his new life, Maker began running again, participating in high school track and field and eventually becoming a sensation qualifying for the 2012 Olympics. But because the newly formed South Sudan was not recognized by the International Olympic committee, Maker had to fight to compete independently, refusing to run for Sudan and taking a stand against its oppression. RUNNER depicts Maker’s difficult and triumphant journey from refugee to world-renowned athlete. His story is a distinctly inspirational one in which the indomitable human spirit emerges against all odds—and has us urging those in power to choose to do the right thing.

The film will be available to watch from 8 am, Saturday, June 27th through Sunday, June 28th. The live Q&A will take place on Saturday, June 27th at 7 pm. For the best community viewing experience, we recommend watching the film starting at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 27 and then joining the live Q&A at 7:00 p.m.

The series is supported in part by grants from the Cape Cod 5 Foundation, the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Falmouth Fund of The Cape Cod Foundation.

Tickets are $14 per person and $12, for Woods Hole Film Festival members and are on sale in advance at www.woodsholefilmfestival.org. For more information emailinfo@woodsholefilmfestival.org or call (508) 495-3456.
