Science Objectives

This cruise is the engineering sea trials of a new experimental deep diving AUV called Clio, designed to facilitate future ocean biogeochemical studies. Clio is intended to be a sampling platform that can be used simultaneously and independently of traditional wire based sampling systems. The ultimate goal of Clio is to lower operational and financial barriers to realizing a biochemical global survey of marine genomics (DNA), transcriptomics (RNA), proteomics (proteins and enzymes), metabolomics (lipids and other metabolites), and metallomics (metals).

Science Activities

Three related activities will occur during this cruise, they are listed here in order of decreasing priority:

(1) Perform a sequence of engineering test dives with the Clio vehicle. These dives will start in shallow water (in Buzzard's Bay) and with each successful completion, subsequent dives will advance to greater depths. The last dives will be near the Shelfbreak Pioneer Array.

(2) Test the efficacy of the Clio vehicle's sampling systems. This activity will be performed in concert with the vehicle dives. Sample processing will occur in the Armstrong's lab spaces.

(3) Conduct complimentary water sampling with the Armstrong's CTD water rosette. This will occur while the Clio vehicle is shipboard recharging.

Science party will supply recovery equipment to use with crane (poles, lines, hooks) to recover vehicle. Science party will provide images of connection points and dockside tests.

Staging on the 30th will be coordinated with the arrival of AT and AR. Loading will take place on July 3rd for departure on July 5. Clean space will be set up on 3rd.
