Science Objectives

Mapping strong fronts in the vicinity of the Gulf Stream in conjunction with operations on R/V Knorr (UVic+everyone).

Tending gliders released in the experiment area (OSU)

Releasing and tracking dye released in experiment area (WHOI + UMASS)

Releasing surface floats, perhaps retrieving (UMass)

The overall goal is to better understand lateral processes in the upper ocean.  For this experiment, particular interest is in what happens with significant wind and deep mixed layers.  This requires mapping out the large-scale features (Atlantis), and detailing the turbulent processes that result (Knorr).

Science Activities

R/V Knorr will be deploying floats and doing tight (5-10 km surveys) around the floats.  R/V Atlantis will be doing larger scale "radiator" patterns towing a free-falling CTD package (MVP - Klymak).  Operational speeds will be between 5 and 10 knots, weather and instrument dependent.  The radiators will be aligned across large-scale features, and be approximately 30 km long, and maybe 15 km cross-feature.

We anticipate that the cruise will be broken into three or four "experiments", where a feature is chosen, perhaps after a short survey, and assets deployed.

At the beginning of each experiment, three or four gliders will be released (Shearman), preferably upstream of major currents.  They will run cross-front surveys, ideally independently of the ship.  If these run too far astray, we may need to break off regular sampling to chase them.

Also, there will be a dye release, hopefully as close to the R/V Knorr as practical, and likely based on a location and depth they suggest to us.  The hope is that the dye and the floats on the R/V Knorr will be as co-located as practical.  The dye will either be flourosceine or rhodamine, both harmless in the amounts we are using.
