Science Objectives

Principal objectives for the Alvin dive program are as follows: 1) perform vehicle testing and trials of DSV Alvin and associated support systems (LARS, USBL, Communications, science gear, etc) after the long non-operational period, will include progressive dive depth increases with a dive to Alvin max depth (4500 m)  2) perform directed training of existing and new personnel to advance technical and operational readiness and advancement toward DSV pilot certification 3) perform on-going new systems integration and engineering tests (thrusters, acoustic modem, video improvements, in-hull computer upgrades and other systems) 4) perform in-water tests of the Operations Vehicle 5) perform joint vehicle operations (Alvin & SENTRY) and as possible concurrent vehicle operations 6) ensure readiness for the follow on Mark Kurz scienctific diving series 7) as possible obtain footage and media for use in the on going vehicle outreach efforts  8) execute the opportunity to include NSF/ONR/WHOI participation on the cruise as possible and practical

Science Activities

no official science objectives are associated with the Alvin efforts - no sampling or equipment placement planned

Additional Information

Is night time work anticipated on this cruise?yesSpecialized tech support (Seabeam, coring, other):
Sentry is expected to dive during the night while Alvin is out of the water.  Operations are expected to take place at any point during the night and an extra Bosun is requested for Sentry Launch and Recovery operations from 18:00 through 07:00 on the following day.  Due to additional Sentry personell, Sentry can fulfill tag line and tugger operations.  If the AB on watch can operate the crane, we should only need a bosun that can work a night shift.Other required equipment and special needs:
possible use of an ALvin elevator for OV testing and possible camera work (as possible/practical with prioritized ALVIN and SENTRY operations)
