Science Objectives | |
Over the past decade the scientific ocean drilling has installed six borehole observatories on the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge off the coast of Washington and British Columbia. The goal of this research has been to understand the pathways of seawater flow through the basaltic crust and the reactions that take place while this seawater is in the crust. These reactions include exchange with the overlying sediment pore waters and water-rock reactions and potentially microbial mediated reactions. The goal of this cruise is to recover all of the instruments that have been deployed on earlier cruises, collect fluid samples, and seal the boreholes for future experiments.
Science Activities | |
Conduct a hydrostatic check at 1026B, 1027C (Maybe?), 1031A, 1031B, 1362A, and 1362B; - Download pressure at 1026B, 1027C (Maybe?), 1031A, 1031B, 1362A, 1362B; - Measure temperatures of the exiting fluids; - Recover the flow meter chimney with thermistors (1362A); - Recover wellhead OmsoSamplers at 1026B, 1362A and 1362B; - Recover downhole samplers at 1026B, 1362A, and 1362B; - Attempt to recover downhole sampler at 1301A; - Sample fluids that vent from the open boreholes and through the umbilicals at 1026B, 1362A and 1362B (1301A??); - Deploy the UH elevator/platform for large volume collection and discrete samples; and - Conduct a background CTD
If necessary, we will - Collect multi-beam bathymetric data and sediment push cores and make measurements of temperature in the sediment for heat flow analysis.
