Science objectives
Determine vertical distribution of deep-sea larvae in the water column at all sites by direct collection.
Estimate dispersal potential and distribution of larvae using isotopic and geochemical methods.
Obtain fall samples of various seep organisms to complete analysis of gametogenesis as a function of species and depths.
Determine if the larvae of methane seep species limited to the Gulf of Mexico can transit around the Florida Peninsula.
Assess the amount of energy exported from methane seeps in the form of gametes to the overlying water column.
Model the dispersal of seep larvae using data on dispersal times, vertical distribution and currents.
Continue biological studies of deep-sea calcareous sponges, epizooic associates of tubeworms and bivalves, and several undescribed species of polychaetes and ophiuroids.
Science Activities
Recover instruments and collectors from 6 long-term larval observatories. As this is the final cruise, none will be redeployed.Collect methane seep animals for gametogenic studies and genetics.
Collect juvenile seep animals for work on geochemistry and isotope analysis.
CTD collections for water-column bacteria.
Filming in Alvin and on ship.
Night-time MOCNESS collections of larvae at a range of depths.
Sorting, fixation and photography of larval forms.
Pre-cruise planning meeting: Teleconference
Zoom preferredMedia personnel on board: Video, IMAX Film Crew
Stephen Low Productions, a Canadian film company will have a small team on board filming a large-screen IMAX film called "Born in the Abyss" that features the upgraded Alvin in a story about deep-sea larval research. The project, originally suggested by Bruce Strickrott, is funded by the National Science Foundation.
