Science objectives
The NORSE DRI effort will focus on characterizing the key physical parameters and processes that govern the predictability of “upper-ocean rapid evolution events” occurring in the ice-free high latitudes. The goal of the program will be to identify which observable parameters are most influential in improving model predictability through inclusion by assimilation, and to field an autonomous observing network that optimizes sampling of high-priority fields. The objective of the DRI is to demonstrate improvements in the predictability of the upper ocean physical fields associated with velocity and acoustic propagation over the course of the study.
The ship will support autonomous observations using an array of surface drifters, buoyancy-driven gliders and floats, to make advances towards the general NORSE objectives:
-
Provide a better understanding of the coupled processes that drive rapid changes in the upper ocean at high latitudes, leveraging the adaptability and persistence of autonomous platforms.
-
Improve predictive capability for sound propagation, transmission loss, and surface duct formation, particularly by using distributed autonomous systems.
Science Activities
-
Deploy and recover 2 Seagliders (APL-UW) for environment characterization.
-
Deploy and recover 2 Slocum gliders for environment characterization and acoustics tests.
-
Deploy 1 Slocum glider from Dr. Våge & Fer’s group (Norway) for the NorEMSO project (Greenland Sea).
-
Deploy 16 surface drifters
-
Deploy and recover 4 SWIFTs.
-
Conduct several realizations of an acoustic transmission experiment, where a Slocum glider records the signal transmitted by a J-9 source deployed from the ship through an upper ocean environment characterized by autonomous platforms.
-
Sample several frontal zonea with the underway CTD system and bow chain.

Basic Internet access via HiSeasNetIs there a need to receive data from shore on a regular basis?
Is there a need to transfer data to shore on a regular basis?
Shipboard Communication Notes: We would like to use the WHOI ftp shore server (armsci@128.128.250.51:outgoing/), if still available, for shore to ship file transfer.

Specialized tech support (Seabeam, coring, other): Occasional full water depth CTD. We don't need around-the-clock SSSG support...
LADCP system would be nice if available, but we don't plan on doing too many deep CTD casts.
Other required equipment and special needs:
Jim Thomson is planning on sending an Airmar WX220 with 115’ cable to be mounted on the stern A-frame. https://www.airmartechnology.com/weather-description.html?id=153 This streams NMEA sentences (ASCII text) over serial RS232. Can it be incorporated into the SSSG data stream (underway data)?
