Operations Area: Northwest Atlantic Ocean

Lat/Lon: 38° 0.0′ N / 70° 0.0′ W

Depth Range: 2,000 / 5,000

Will the vessel be operating within 200 NM of a foreign country? no

Science objectives

1) Initiate construction of the OTZ Observation Network by deploying three oceanographic moorings (two sound-source moorings and one bioacoustic/sediment-trap mooring);

(2) Test critical components of the OTZ Observation Network that will be used to advance critical scientific gaps in knowledge of the Northwest Atlantic mesopelagic by conducting integrated and adaptive surveys designed to advance understanding of: biomass, distribution, biodiversity, life histories of tz animals, structure of food webs, and biological and physical processes that impact C transport and consumption.

Science Activities

Deploy, recover and re-deploy bioacoustic mooring with sediment trap.
Deploy (beginning of cruise) and then recover (end of cruise) MINIONs and floating sediment traps in vicinity of bioacoustics mooring.
EK80 data collection along cruise track at periodic intervals.
Deploy and test two RAFOS sound source moorings.
Deploy glider for full ocean depth test of RAFOS Ocean Acoustics Monitoring (ROAM) tags.
Conduct CTD (5) casts to collect samples for thorium isotope analysis.
