Science objectives

Science objectives are to 1) perform CTDs to assess salinity calibration methods and validate stand-alone salinity sensors, 2) deploy/recover an X-Spar buoy, 3) perform underway testing of the EcoCTD, 4) perform a bathymetric survey for Multibeam calibration, 5) assess performance of the Armstrong Active Heave compensation system.

Science Activities

See above. Preliminary cruise waypoints and map are uploaded in the attachments. In addition, schematics and photos of the X-Spar and EcoCTD have been uploaded.

Pre-cruise planning meeting: Visit WHOI

EM710 MkII (40 to 100 kHz) Multibeam Echosounder

Shipboard Equipment Notes: The PIs of this project kindly ask for use of the following equipment: 1) two CTD/rosettes and two fishes with sufficient backup parts (at least one set with recent SBE sensor calibrations), 2) two salinometers with salt sample bottles, 3) ability to utilize the Armstrong Active Heave Compensation on the main CTD arm, 4) use of the crane or A-frame for deployment/recovery of a 14 ft long drifting buoy, 5) deck space for storage of buoy, 6) deck space and power for a small winch on the fantail, 7) use of the Multibeam and other underway bathymetric systems.

Shipboard Communication

Basic Internet access via HiSeasNet

Shipboard Communication Notes: During the X-SPAR deployment, the X-SPAR location will be made available via satellite iridium communication through a web portal. Standard shipboard internet will be necessary for this. A line of site beacon will also be installed on the X-SPAR.

CTD/Water Sampling

Wet Labs C*Star transmissometer (660nm wavelength)
SBE43 oxygen sensor
911+ Rosette 24-position, 10-liter bottle Rosette with dual T/C sensors
Wet Labs FLNTURTD Combination Flourometer and Turbidity Sensor

Critical CTD Sensors:  We would like to have two recently calibrated fish from SBE

Winches

Other Portable Winch

Winch Notes: A small Teledyne winch system will be provided by the science party. We would like a 4'x4' space to secure it to a location on the fantail of the deck. Standard 120 V power source needed.

In addition, while using the Active Heave Compensation system, we would like to log the winch MRU data. We would also like to consider the installation of a load cell on the CTD termination in order to record wire tension.

Wire use and application

CTD Winch with .322" Electro-mechanical wire

Wire Notes: We would like to utilize the Armstrong Active Heave Compensation on the main CTD arm, which includes the .322 wire.

Over the Side Equipment

Will you be bringing any equipment (winches, blocks, etc.) that lowers instruments over the side? yes

Details: Yes, we will be towing the EcoCTD off the aft end of the ship with a small Teledyne winch (the same winch that is used for uCTDs).

We will also deploy and recover the X-SPAR buoy, which is approx 59 ft long. Drawing and photos provided.
