Science objectives

The Alvin Operations Group and NAVSEA plan to dive DSV Alvin in an area approximately 60 nautical miles off of the coast of Chile. This cruise is intended to accomplish a series of up to 3 Alvin dives in order to increase Alvin's maximum certified dive depth to 4500m. NAVSEA will participate in the cruise, including participation on the actual certifcation dive, as a part of the 4500 m certification process.

The first dive will be an engineering test dive to a depth of approximately 3800m in preparation for the deeper follow on dives. Dive two and three will be scheduled to take the submersible to the maximum design depth of 4500m. No additional dives are planned for this period.

No scientific operations are planned for this series and no sampling will occur during time at sea.

Science Activities

Dive 1: 'warm up' dive to prepare the sub for operations to 4500m. Dive one is likely to be at depths at or near 3800 m, Alvin's current certification depth.

Dive 2: Possible certification dive (depending on performance of Dive 1)
Dive 3: Contigency dive (weather, equipment issues etc) - optional based on results of Dive 1 and 2

No science other than Alvin certification and engineering evaluation diving is planned
