Science objectives
The purpose of this proposal is to initiate seafloor geodetic measurements of plate
motion in the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The proposal is for a three-year effort to measure plate motion at sites offshoe the state of Washington and offshore Newport Oregon. Sites will be located on the incoming plate to measure the present day convergence between the Juan de Fuca and North American plates and a site will be located on the continental slope of NA to measure the elastic deformation due to stick-slip behavior on the megathrust fault. These new seafloor data will constrain existing models of slip behavior that presently are poorly constrained by land geodetic data 100 km from the deformation front.
Science Activities
Purpose of cruise is to deploy a total of eight free-fall packages with four units deployed offshore the coast of Washington State nominally at 46-30N, 126-28W and and four units deployed offshore Newport Oregon at nominally 44-40N, 125-10W. Each package consists of Sonardyne Fetch transponder on a concrete benchmark and an float package that can be released by acoustic command from the surface. Packages are released at the sea surface and free fall to the sea floor. While on station deploy Wave Glider for data collection, then recover.Pre-cruise planning meeting: Teleconference
