Announcement
and Call for Speakers
You
are invited to attend the third oceanographic Buoy Workshop sponsored jointly
by the Office of Naval Research and the Marine Technology Society. Based
on the wishes of the 1998 Buoy Workshop participants the meeting, which
is organized every two years, will be held at a site where active buoy
technology development is being preformed. The Workshop will convene at
the Clark Conference Facility of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution,
and the program will include a half day of site and laboratory tours.
Purpose
The 2½
day Workshop will address all pertinent aspects of oceanographic and other
buoy systems for deployment in unprotected deep and coastal ocean waters.
The topics include:
-
Buoy System Design
-
Hydrodynamic
Modeling
-
Buoy Design and
Fabrication
-
Buoy Mooring
Configurations, Materials, and Components
-
Drifting and
Profiling Buoys
-
Telemetry and
Power Linkage Between Surface Buoys and In-Line Sensors
-
At Sea Deployment,
Servicing, and Retrieval
A special session
is planned under the theme: “Going for the Long Haul: Oceanographic
Buoy Systems for Long Term Deployments.” This session will cover the
results of combined efforts in numerical modeling, buoy systems design,
buoy platform, mooring components and configuration selection, and evaluation
of at sea behavior and performance degradation, that leads to buoy systems
with long service life at deep sea and coastal deployment sites.

Format
Speakers
are requested to submit an abstract of their talks, preparation of written
papers is not required. The Speaker Program will be organized in up to
eight focused sessions. The presentations will be 15 to 20 minutes long.
Setup of a small number of specialized panels is planned to broaden the
discussions about presentations made in each technical session. The panel
will consist of the session speakers and will be led by a recognized expert
in the particular field. Speakers and attendees are encouraged to share
their experiences, failures, and successes. This will help to contribute
to the main strength of the Workshop, the open exchange of insight and
developments in the highly specialized field of Buoy Technology.

Local
Information
Woods Hole
is located on scenic Cape Cod 85 miles from both Boston's Logan Airport,
and the T.F. Green Airport in Providence, RI. There is direct bus service
from Logan Airport to Woods Hole and Falmouth, the town adjacent to the
small Woods Hole village, by the Bonanza Bus Line, which also provides
service with bus change from Providence's T.F. Green Airport [Info and
schedule at www.bonanzabus.com].
The two designated hotels for the Workshop, see below, are less than a
mile from the Falmouth bus station. Woods Hole and Falmouth are part of
the Cape Cod region, the workshop is held in the week before the beginning
of the busy summer tourist season. Temperatures are typically in the sixties,
maybe low seventies, and the weather is mostly pleasant (late spring).
The local attractions like the ferry rides to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket
islands as well as whale watching cruises and the large Cape Cod National
Sea Shore parks on the outer Cape Cod are not yet crowded. The hotels may
extend the group rate for an added vacation day or two.
