Dear Workshop Participants and Browsers:
A lively ONR/MTS Buoy Workshop 2006 took place March 14-16 at Texas
A&M University in College Station, Texas. Over 90 attendees participated
in the 2-1/2 day program and enjoyed most interesting site tours.
The Speaker Program consisted of 23 presentations with summarizing
Panel Sessions, and an IOOS Industry Information Exchange Forum. Despite
a lower number of talks compared with the record 2004 Buoy Workshop
there seemed to be not enough time for discussions, exchange of experience,
and visiting the exhibitor displays. We toured the Buoy Shop of the
Geochemical and Environmental Research Group (GERG), the Haynes Coastal
Engineering Laboratory, and the Offshore Technology Research Center,
all part of Texas A&M University with its large campus, home to
almost 50,000 students.
The catastrophic hurricane and tsunami events in 2004 and 2005
focused a lot of the workshop’s attention on tsunami detecting
and weather monitoring buoy systems. The weather buoys of the National
Data Buoy Center play an important role in hurricane tracking and
sea state and wind monitoring. An IOOS Industry Information Exchange
Forum was organized to focus on the need to build over thirty new
tsunami detection systems for the US waters, to monitor both in
the Atlantic and Pacific deep ocean seismic waves before they become
deadly surges in shallow water. These oceanographic buoy systems
are becoming a vital life saving tool of significant value for many
coastal regions around the world.
The following program pages give an overview of all talks and their
organization in topical sessions. The significant progress in understanding
and improving buoy systems and their components over the last decade
is reflected in a number of presentations, as is the advancement
to predict survivability in the challenging open ocean environment,
and the emerging technology of buoy based observation networks.
Additional relevant buoy connected developments were covered by
a number of speakers. The speakers and their organizations deserve
our special appreciation for their readiness to share their work’s
successes and failures with the attendees.
We gratefully acknowledge the partial funding support from the
Office of Naval Research, and help with publicity and insurance
coverage by the Marine Technology Society. Special thanks go to
Dr. Norm Guinasso and John Walpert from the Geochemical and Environmental
Research Group (GERG), aided by Maureen Reap from the College of
Geosciences at Texas A&M University for very essential local
support. Their efforts and help made it possible to have the workshop
at the University on rather short notice (The original effort to
have the workshop in Gulfport, Mississippi, had to be stopped due
to the devastation by hurricane Katrina).
A CD with the workshop program, the speakers’ abstracts and
presentation materials, exhibitor’s information, and a participant’s
list is being assembled to be sent to all attendees, the CD will
also be on sale for $25.
Sincerely,
Walter Paul
