This is an optically transmitted video from the Nereus vehicle to a communications node lowered in the water column from a surface vessel. There are a few points to make here, 1) the link is free space optical (FSO) at a data rate of 10Mbps, 2) the vehicle is free swimming, and wirelessly controlled using the FSO link and an acoustic modem, and 3) this is a first, that we know of, demonstration of an untethered, remotely controlled, underwater vehicle.

This video is also optically transmitted FSO, via the link described above. This six gilled shark was quite a surprise appearing from nowhere during an otherwise uneventful technical demonstration. It is an example of the diverse and unexpected life encountered in the deep ocean.
