TEX86 is an important proxy for constraining ocean temperatures in the Earth's past. Here we develop and apply a Bayesian regression approach to the SST-TEX86 calibration that explicitly allows for model parameters to smoothly vary as a function of space. Applications to both Quaternary and Eocene TEX86 data demonstrate that our approach produces improved predictions and allows for probabilistic assessments of past temperatures.

The state of - and mechanisms driving - hydroclimatic change in the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) are unknown. Here we present a synthesis of LGM IPWP hydroclimate that combines marine and terrestrial proxies with a multi-model ensemble of simulations. We find that the exposure of the Sunda Shelf (due to lowered sea level) weakened convection over the IPWP and explains the proxy-inferred patterns of hydroclimatic change. This result implicates changes in global sea level as a major driver of glacial-interglacial tropical climate.

Multidecadal variability in East African rainfall is an important but poorly understood component of the climate of the region. Here we use paleoclimate records of relative moisture balance from the last millennium and general circulation model simulations to provide perspective on multidecadal variability in East Africa and insight on the mechanisms that drive it.
