Still Images WHOI in addition to the library, maintains a comprehensive image database known as the IMS. Here you can review thousands of WHOI still imagery and even some brief video. Downloading of hi resolution content is dependent upon the access level granted. All WHOI employees are granted at least general access. Be advised that WHOI maintains the copyright to these images and that licensing of these images for any reason outside of WHOI should be routed through the media office via Erika Fitzpatrick. This way we can track who and how our images are being used. Unless a project features WHOI prominently or is a free educational resource there is fee assessed for commercial use of WHOI images. This fee helps offset the time and expense involved in researching and licensing image requests. The fee is determined by several factors including but not limited to the nature of the project, language and distribution rights, and print run. WHOI utilizes it’s own license agreement in which one-time and non-exclusive rights are granted. Video The media office has access to a video database where many videos can be made available for review on DVD screeners that have been time code embedded. Production companies and museums among others review the dvds and then may order clips based on the time codes they provide. Broadcast quality clips are output by the multi-media department. The media video database is comprised of mostly standard definition footage with a small amount of hi definition footage being added when it becomes available. Most requests are for supporting video or “b-roll”. But, there are often more specific requests for interviews with WHOI scientists or to feature expeditions and other WHOI science. Contact
