I. Preface
The Institution has a responsibility to provide a
work and learning environment that is healthy and productive for
all
employees and students.
II. Provisions
A. In recognition of the evidence that
smoking is a health risk to the non-smoker as well as the smoker,
the Institution has expanded its restrictions on workplace smoking
to prohibit smoking in the interiors of all Institution buildings
and vehicles. A limited number of housing units are exempt from
this restriction.
B. Smoking is not allowed anywhere within the
interior spaces of the Institution's vessels. There are NO exceptions
to this policy. During foul weather, at the Master's discretion,
smoking may be allowed in the wet lab on OCEANUS, in the aft
hanger on KNORR, and in the ROV hanger on ATLANTIS. At other
times, smoking may be allowed on the weather decks, as long
as said activity does not interfere with the general practice
of good seamanship. Additionally, the practice of selling tobacco
products to crew members/technical staff from bonded stores
on board the Institution's vessels will be discontinued January
1, 1998.
III. Support
The Institution provides programs for students, employees
and family members who wish assistance in stopping
smoking. The programs will be administered through
the Ombuds/EEO Office and the Human Resources Office, as a
component of the Institution's Wellness Programs.
IV. Compliance
All Institution employees, students, visitors and
other affiliates are required to comply with this policy.
