Assists in maintaining HVAC systems, clean engine room bilges, strainers in lubricating system, and all water pumps, tanks, and connected systems. Checks refrigeration plant, and ensures safety devices are in proper working condition.

Transfers freshwater, performs machinist and pipe fitting work, and assists with repair of ship's machinery.

Assists, while in port, with maintenance and repair of engine room equipment and spaces, and in loading freshwater and bunkers.

Keeps a log of all watch operations and conditions, including unusual occurrences and emergency signals.

May stand engine room watch (on R/V Oceanus).

Performs other duties as required.

High school diploma or equivalent education and one-year sea duty as an Oiler or higher engine room rating; in the absence of a diploma, equivalent work experience. Prefer Junior Engineer experience on similar vessel. For the R/V Oceanus, requires a US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Document endorsed as a Junior Engineer. Candidates must be familiar with a variety of engine room equipment and tools, have the ability to discern and help repair equipment malfunctions and to perform basic mathematical calculations, and demonstrate good safety practices and procedures.

All unlicensed personnel must have all applicable training as required by the Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW 95)
