Job Summary:

The Laboratory Safety Office r reports to the Environment Health and Safety Manager and works with the Institution's various departments in developing, implementing, and overseeing radiation safety, biosafety, waste management programs, and lab safety programs.

Major Duties:
  • Serves as the Institution's Assistant Radiation Safety Officer and Assistant Biological Safety Officer

  • Conducts safety training, safety inspections, surveys/monitoring, record keeping, inventory control, and other program functions;

  • Responds to concerns and emergencies, and serves as a member of the corresponding safety committees.

  • Evaluates and implements exposure controls.

  • Performs other related duties as the supervisor may, from time to time, deem necessary.
Job Specifications (Knowledge, skills and abilities normally required for competent performance in the job):

Bachelor's degree in science or engineering preferred. A minimum of 3 years of related experience in an academic or research organization preferred. Ability to work effectively with a team and independently with minimum supervision and to communicate effectively, orally and in writing required. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and familiarity with computers, computer databases, and on-line training systems preferred. Must be able to lift, move, and handle materials weighing up to 45 lbs and wear personal protective equipment.

THIS POSITION INVOLVES POTENTIAL EXPOSURE TO SOURCES OF HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS AND RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS.
