Summary: |
| Identifying
the networking technologies required to support the MIS tactical
and strategic business plans, implements these technologies and
supports integration of business systems into this architecture.
Administers and supports the NT/SQL file servers and their components.
Provides personal computer (PC) support services to all administrative
associates by responding to requests for assistance. Develops custom
applications in conjunction with other MIS team members to support
the needs of the Finance and Administration area. Understands administrative
systems; provides production support and troubleshooting for the
core processing system. |
| Major
Duties |
|
30% NT/SQL
Administration:
- Coordinates
all operation and administrative activities as they relate to
the NT/SQL file servers and application servers.
- Sets up
and maintains user accounts and login scripts. Manages and administers
the NT/SQL servers.
- Works
with customers and developers to ensure that production requirements
are met.
- Participates
in Application System Design and other activities where specific
networking technologies are impacted or are of concern.
- Ensures
the logical and physical security and integrity of the NT servers
and data.
- Ensures
that modifications to the system are well planned, tested and
documented before being implemented.
- Develops,
maintains and documents appropriate policies and procedures
to ensure the viability and security of the NT server environment,
including tape backup and restore, user access control, production
change control, and disaster recovery.
- Monitors
the NT/SQL system for security violations on a regular basis.
40% SQL
Development, Web-based Development, and Custom Reporting:
Design·
- Translates
functional requirements into a technical design.
- Ensures
unit test data is prepared and maintained.
- Develops
accurate and meaningful detail design documents and ensures
their completeness and accuracy by confirming approach with
other MIS staff and the customer.
- Participates
in the receipt of management and customer approval of design.
- Defines
and ensures design is complete, standards are met, and interfaces
are addressed.
- Evaluates
proposed hardware and software products.
Programming
- Develops
accurate and efficient programs, which meet specifications and
standards.
- Conducts
code reviews with other developers.
- Prepares
and tests plans.
Testing
- Prepares
integration test plans.
- Integrates
testing and stress testing.
- Identifies
system deficiencies as errors or enhancements.
- Recommends
possible solutions and implements approved solutions.
Documenting
- All supporting
activities outlined above should be documented clearly, accurately,
and consistently.
30% Support
the Administrative Production Systems:
- Monitors
the production systems to ensue successful daily processing.
This includes the monitoring, maintaining, performance tuning,
backup and recovery of the Informix databases consistent with
our Level of Service agreements with the customer.
- Troubleshoots
production exceptions. Analyzes and prioritizes problems and
impacts along with the customer and/or Business Analyst. Researches
and implements solutions with customer and/or Business Analyst
involvement.
- Installs
software upgrades (applications or tools) and conducts technical
tests on these upgrades to ensure they are fully tested and
acceptable before migrated to a production environment.

| Major
Challenges |
- Keeping
up-to-date with related technologies at WHOI, features and function
of PC operating systems, the development environment, which
may be HP, Informix, SQL, C++, and application software. This
is a significant undertaking as the personal computer and networking
technologies are in a constant state of change.
- Understanding,
at a detailed level, how Bi-Tech is technically structured to
best support the operational needs of the administrative area.
- Maintaining
a coordinated, flexible and successful business approach within
a fast-paced changing environment.
- Managing
multiple requests from internal and external sources, often
with conflicting or non-integrated needs and responsibilities.
- Building
and maintaining teamwork with other departments

| Team
Engagement |
| This individual
will perform as team member on all assignments. At times, the team
may only consist of the customer and this position, but at no time
will the individual work alone. This is not to imply that the individual
will not have individual accountability or responsibility. Rather,
it is to confirm the understanding that there is always a customer
for the work that we do. The customer is always an integral part
of the team. The individual may be required to effectively negotiate
with developers and external vendors who need the services of this
role. This position must have the leadership, facilitation, and
negotiation skills to perform effectively. |
| Desired
Education/Experience for Hiring: |
| B.S.
in Computer Science or related technical field. Hands on experience
with HP, Informix, C++; Windows and Microsoft applications; relational
databases and their concepts; VB, SQL, Bi-Tech's CDD reporting tool,
MS-Access, HTML; Visual InterDev, Active-S, ASP, Java Script, VB
Script. Functional knowledge of administrative systems is a primary
skill requirement. Must be a quick learner and self-starter with
excellent analytical and communication skills, consideration of
others, strong work ethic, high energy and drive to achieve quality
and customer satisfaction. |
