Employment

J-1 scholars (i.e. researchers, short-term scholars, specialists, etc.) are authorized only for the employment associated with the activities described on the Form DS-2019. Outside employment that is not related to the program objective is not permitted.

Professors and research scholars may participate in occasional lectures and short-term consultations, if the Responsible/ Alternate Responsible Officer authorize it in advance and in writing and if it meets the following criteria:

•  are directly related to the objectives of the exchange visitor's program

•  are incidental to the exchange visitor's primary program activities; and

•  do not delay the completion date of the visitor's program

* Exchange visitors engaging in such activities must act as independent contractors.
