Information for WHOI Sponsors

Eligibility Requirements

Exchange Visitor Program sponsors are required to ensure that perspective exchange visitors meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Participation in a program that furthers objectives and has appropriate activity as described under definitions of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program.
  • Ensure that the exchange visitors is not subject to the "12-month bar" based on previous time spent in the U.S. in another J status.
  • Possess sufficient funding to cover expenses for the duration of the program.
  • Ensure that the exchange visitor possesses appropriate academic or similar credentials for program activity. The DOS does not state minimum academic level, but generally the researcher should at least possess a Bachelor's degree.
  • Possess sufficient knowledge of English to participate in program.
  • The participant not be a candidate for tenure track position.
  • Ensure that the exchange visitor is aware of the health insurance requirements and understands who is responsible for payment.
