  • New Department of State Rule Limits Interview Waivers (June 2003)

The Department of State issued an interim rule which would require 100% interviews for visa applicants. The implementation date is no later than August 1, 2003.

The change in policy results from heightened security concerns after September 11, 2001 and the ongoing war on terrorism.

Consular posts will generally not accept visa applications more than 90 days in advance of the intended travel date, but applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible due to the large increase in the numbers of interviews and longer waits for interviews.

Please refer to http://travel.state.gov/visa_telegrams.html to read the entire text of the cable.

  • Department of State Encourages Posts to Give Priority to F, M and J Student and Exchange Visitor Visa Processing (July 2003)

The Department of State sent a cable to all embassies and consulates asking them to give priority visa processing to students and exchange visitors in the professor, student and research scholar categories.

Eventually the full text of this cable may appear on the DOS web-site at http://travel.state.gov/visa_telegrams.html.
