Matlab 5.3 (release 11) Installation Instructions
Windows 9x, ME, NT and 2000

Obtain a copy of the Matlab 5.3 (Release 11) CD from the CIS helpdesk.

Download the Matlab 5.3 (Release 11) passcodes by filling out the form and choosing submit. The contents of the resulting screen should be saved and placed in c:\flexlm with the name license.dat.

Use a text editor to modify the license.dat file by inserting the SERVER and DAEMON lines after the first two lines. Note that case is important!

  SERVER 128.128.xxx.xxx ID=171754 27000
  DAEMON MLM c:\matlabr11\bin\mlm.exe

In the SERVER line, replace the xxx.xxx with the appropriate components of your ip address. In the DAEMON line, the actual path may vary, depending on where you choose to install Matlab 5.3.

Note: If your machine does not have an assigned ip address, you can try to use the machine's Computer Name instead of the ip address on the SERVER line. The machine's Computer Name is accessed from Control Panel | Network | Identification for Windows 9x and Windows NT and from Control Panel | Network and Dial-up Connections | Advanced | Network Identification for Windows 2000. If a host name has been specified (accessed from Control Panel | Network | TCP/IP Protocol | DNS for Windows 9x and Windows NT), this should match the Computer Name.

Start the installation process from the CD. Choose the option for installing "Concurrent Licenses" (not PLP, Personal License Passcode) and when prompted for the path to the license.dat file, choose the default, C:\Flexlm.

Run through the installation process choosing those components you've specified as you downloaded the license.dat file. It is simplest to choose the default installation directory, C:\matlabr11\bin. If Matlab is to be installed elsewhere, the DAEMON line in the license.dat file must be changed.

When the Installer prompts you to install the license manager, SAY YES. It's suggested that you select the directory c:\flexlm for the license manager.

Running Matlab

  1. For Windows 9x
    1. The FlexLM License Manager is installed in the Startup folder by default. ie. in C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. This shortcut runs the license manager, which is now required to be running in order to run Matlab 5.3 (R11).
    2. You may want to move the FlexLM License Manager shortcut to the desktop and start the license manager only when needed for Matlab use rather than having it start automatically every time the machine is booted.
    3. Run the FlexLM License Manager, then run MATLAB 5.3.
  2. For Windows NT/2000
    1. The FLEXlm License Server runs as a Service, starting automatically.
    2. To check its status open Services via the ControlPanel. It may be necessary to stop and restart the service if a change is made to the license.dat file.
    3. Run Matlab 5.3.
