Linux@WHOI: Support
CIS supports Linux, just as we support Solaris, IRIX, and other
professional Unix-oid operating systems. However, we have to say
that with certain reservations. The field of Linux systems is
so wildly diverse that nobody can really keep track of it all;
while this diversity boosts Linux's flexibility, it does put a
certain constraint on available support. Of the dozens of Linux-based
operating systems available today, CIS currently recommends
the Red Hat Linux
and Debian GNU/Linux
distributions, for which we can offer the most and best support.
CIS can offer you assistance with many aspects of Linux installation,
administration, and maintenance. If you have a Red Hat or Debian
system on which you would like work done, please contact the CIS
HelpDesk.
If you are purchasing a new PC upon which to run a Linux-based
system, please get in touch with us before you buy it. Because
some hardware manufacturers do not release good specifications
for their equipment, Linux may not be able to support all models
of PC components. By checking with us first, we can check over
your configuration to ensure compatibility.
