iPass with no client
iPass - Getting connected without a client
There is no iPassConnect client for Windows 9x/ME/NT,
MacOS 9 or earlier and Linux computers. However, you
can gain access to the Internet using iPass without a client.
In a nutshell, follow these steps:
- Create a dial-up profile for 'WHOI iPass' using your system's
built-in dialing software (PPP)
- Contact the Helpdesk (x-2439) or helpdesk@whoi.edu
and ask for an iPass phone number local to your location
- Note: if you are leaving on travel, please do this before
you leave
- Use this pattern for your username: IPASS/jscientist@XXXX.whoi.edu,
where XXXX is a valid telephone billing code.
- Substitute your own RAS username in place of jscientist
- Use your own RAS password when prompted
- That's it!
There is the disadvantage that you must know a phone
number accepted by the iPass service. But, if you are
using Linux at home or will be in a single location while away,
getting connected may be worth that inconvenience. Remember: iPass
only gets you connected to the Internet - not to WHOInet.
You must use our VPN service to
gain access to internal services as if you were in your WHOI office.
Wireless - it works for wireless too!
iPass has partnered with T-Mobile for Internet access through
their Hot-Spots. At T-Mobile Hot-Spots - and you can try this
with any wireless access point that requests that you authenticate
- do this:
- Open a Web browser. You should receive a webpage which is
associated with the provider.
- The provider's webpage should provide a section to log in.
- Enter your username as above: IPASS/username@XXXX.whoi.edu,
where XXXX is a valid telephone billing code
Also, visit the iPass web site
which lists wireless Hot-Spot locations
