iPass Quick Instructions

These are quick startup instructions for running iPass. These instructions assume that the iPass client and VPN client are both installed on the system. If you need to install either the iPass client or VPN client, click here (this link leads to WHOI's anonymous ftp site at: ftp://ftp.whoi.edu/pub/services/).

Starting iPass

Double click on the iPassConnect icon on the Desktop.
OR
Click on the Start Menu > Programs > iPass > iPassConnect

When the iPass Connection box comes up, click the “Country” dropdown menu under “Search by Location or Phone Number” and select the country that you are in.

Next select the “State” (Or Province depending on country) that you are in from the dropdown menu

Next select the “City” (Or closest city to your location) that you are in from the dropdown menu

Click Find and a brief list of all available local numbers for the city you are in will be displayed.

Click the arrow next to the City under the Modem Section and an expanded list of all available numbers will be displayed.

Detailed Phonebook Listing

Select the number you want to dial (Click on the Number). Then select “Dial Properties” only if:
1. You need to dial an outside line.
2. You need to dial the 10 digit number (Area Code + Number).
3. You need to change a specific dialing feature.

Dial Properties:

To access an outside line in an office, hotel, etc. enter the number to access the line in the “To access outside line dial” box.
To disable call waiting, select from the “To disable call waiting dial” menu the appropriate dial string.
To switch between Pulse and Tone dialing, select from the “Dial using” menu Pulse or Tone.

If the number in the display next to the Dial Properties is correct, click Connect.

Enter in your User Name which is the first portion of your RAS username.
i.e. For “your_username@whoi.edu” enter in “your_username

Next enter in your Domain which is the second portion of your RAS username plus your 4 digit billing code (Long distance/ Copier Code).
i.e. For “your_username@whoi.edu” enter in “xxxx.whoi.edu” where “xxxx” is your valid 4 digit billing code.

Next enter in your RAS (not your email) password. (This password depending on when issued follows a Two Letter, a Number combination and is 9 characters long.)

Then click OK and the dialing and authentication process will begin.

Click OK to dial out

Once connected, you will be on the Internet outside of WHOI (Unless you used the Falmouth local number which is the local RAS number).

From this point you can use WHOI Web based email available at http://webmail.whoi.edu

If you need to access WHOI services (internal web pages, send email, etc.) and machines, you will need to run the VPN client.

Starting the VPN client:

Double click on the VPN Dialer or WHOI VPN icon on the Desktop.
OR
Click on the Start Menu > Programs > Cisco Systems VPN Client > VPN Client

Click on the WHOI VPN connection, then click Connect.

Enter in your WHOI RAS username: your_username@whoi.edu and RAS Password in the popup fields, then click OK.

You are now have access to internal WHOI services, web pages and can send email through your email client using outbox.whoi.edu as your outgoing mail client.
