Art Gaylord's update to WHOI on Internet Status
April 12, 2001

The new Internet service that we ordered from Qwest is now in service and the additional bandwidth we ordered from Genuity has been installed and should be fully operational by the end of the week. This means that there will be no shortage of bandwidth to the Internet when Vitts goes out of business on May 9. In addition these changes increase our total bandwidth to the Internet from 9 Mbits/sec to 15 Mbits/sec.

I note with gratitude that Qwest, Genuity and Verizon all cooperated in meeting our deadlines to bring us these new connections much faster than their normal installation times. I also thank Hartley Hoskins and John Krauspe for their efforts in monitoring the work of these companies and making sure the transition to the new services was timely and nondisruptive. (Did anyone even notice that most of our traffic has been going through Qwest since early Wednesday evening?)

If you have questions or concerns please contact Hartley or me.

Thanks, Art
