Most users want their WHOI email account first. Applying
for an email account first is a good idea as most of our services
depend upon having one.
The WHOI email system uses an IMAP server as opposed to a POP
server. A POP server will "pop" your email messages
from the server to your computer. An IMAP server lets you view
and manage your email messages directly on the server. One of
the advantages to this design is that it allows you to check your
email from a different computer, and see the same set of folders
and messages as you'd see from your office computer. This behavior
is important to people at WHOI because so many of us travel and
so many of us want to have access to our e-mail from home.
