Friends & Fishers is incorporated under the Articles of Organization (General Laws, Chapter 180). The purpose of the corporation is to engage in the following activities: to act together to share and secure information, expertise, techniques, resources, etc., that will enhance and preserve the natural resources of the Edgartown Great Pond; to exist and be operated exclusively for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes to all interested citizens.

The group is also engaged in a long-running court battle with the Mass. Dept. of Env. Protection and the Town of Edgartown regarding nutrient loading to the estuary.

FEES: Annual membership: $10. Contributions and participation are greatly accepted.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS: "Bring Back the Fishery to Edgartown Great Pond" and development of "R/V Monitor." Participates in the "Adopt-A-Boat" program in the New Bedford and Fairhaven schools.

The Friends Of Sengekontacket (FOS) is a non-profit organization founded to preserve Sengekontacket Pond and to provide a basis for developing a long-term management plan for the Pond. FOS has funded comprehensive investigations of the Pond by WHOI researchers. The FOS Barrier Beach Task Force has brought together representation of various local, state, and Federal agencies to develop a management plan for the Joseph Sylvia State Beach, the barrier beach forming the seaward side of Sengekontacket Pond.

Owned and operated by the Massachusetts Audubon Society, Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary is a 350-acre area surrounded on three sides by a saltwater pond. It is a mixture of ecosystems with fields, forests, fresh and brackish ponds, salt marshes and beach with trails throughout. The nature center contains exhibits of native reptiles, amphibians, fish and crabs, as well as other interactive exhibits. Programs are scheduled daily in the summer and on some Saturdays in the winter.

PUBLICATIONS: "Sanctuary Magazine" (4 per year), "Felix Neck Newsletter"(one per year) and "Connections" newsletter (3 per year), all free to members.

The Edgartown Shellfish Department enforces rules and regulations of shellfishing within the Towns' boundaries. The Department is responsible for seeding programs with hatchery-produced seed as well as experimentation with natural recruitment programs. The Department has cooperated with various research organizations and operates under the direction of the Board of Selectmen, a three-member board, and the Edgartown Shellfish Committee, a five-member board. The Department has three full-time employees with two additional summer assistants. A copy of Rules & Regulations, as well as licenses, are available through the Selectmens Office, Town Hall, 70 Main Street, Edgartown, MA 02539.
