The Conservation Commission is a volunteer board comprised of seven
(7) full and three (3) alternate/associate members. The Commission
is responsible through a review and permit process for administering
and enforcing the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and developing,
administering and enforcing the Town of Sandwich Wetlands Bylaw,
and its regulations within the Town. The Board receives support
from full time staff of a Conservation Officer and clerk. The Commission
is also responsible for managing 1,500+ acres of conservation land,
initiating conservation programs, acquiring additional lands, procuring
conservation and agricultural restrictions, advising town agencies
on resource protection, and educating local citizens. It is presently
developing a slide program informing the citizenry about the importance
of wetlands protection and Sandwich's conservation lands. The Commission
meets bi-monthly (first and third Wednesdays) to conduct regulatory
business and one additional night to conduct other business.

The Board of Health enforces the Massachusetts General Laws, the
state Sanitary and Environmental Codes, and local health regulations.
This includes the location, construction and repair of septic systems,
hazardous material storage and disposal, solid waste disposal, bathing
water quality, private water supplies, private wells, and non-community
public water supplies. The board regulates the use of pesticides/
herbicides.

The Natural Resources Department administers the daily workload
of the Conservation Commission and the Land Bank Committee. The
Department is entrusted with developing and implementing the town's
conservation land management strategies, including wildlife habitat
diversification; enforcing the Wetlands Protection Act, Town Wetlands
Bylaw, their regulations and orders; shellfish management; enforcing
other environmental laws and regulations, including shellfishing,
fishing, hunting, trapping, illegal dumping, recreational vehicle
operation, and land use; and oil and hazardous waste spill response.
