The conservation commission is made up of seven appointed volunteers to acquire open space, administer and enforce the Massachusetts Wetland Protection Act, administer local protection bylaws, manage open space land, develop open space plans, initiate other conservation programs, advise town agencies on resource protection, participate in agriculture preservation and educate local citizens. The Commission sponsors an annual free distribution of evergreen seedlings to Harwich residents. Publications available include "Town of Harwich Conservation Restriction Program (available at Town Hall)," "Goals and Objectives, Harwich Conservation Commission, 1991" (available on request).

HOURS: 24 hours/7 days (summer)

The Department of Natural Resources enforces the rules and regulations of fishing, shellfishing, and Wetlands Protection Act in the Town. The Department deals with marshland, docks, illegal dumping, and wildlife management programs. The Department has a harbor patrol. Department operates a shellfish laboratory at Wychmere Harbor raising quahog seed using an upweller system. Involved with Herring Run management, "Coast Sweep" efforts, and a phytoplankton monitoring program station. Manages the Harwich Water Quality Task Force. Also responsible for operation of Saquatucket Municipal Marina and Wychmere Town Fishing Pier. Member of the American Littoral Society.

The Board of Health enforces the Massachusetts General Laws, the state Sanitary Code, the state Environmental Code, and local health regulations. This includes, but is not limited to, the location, construction and repair of septic systems, hazardous material storage and disposal, solid waste disposal, bathing water quality, private water supplies, private wells, and non- community public water supplies. The board regulates the use of pesticides/herbicides.
