The conservation commission is made up of seven appointed volunteers
to acquire open space, administer and enforce the Massachusetts
Wetland Protection Act, administer any local protection bylaws,
manage open space land, develop open space plans, initiate recycling
and other conservation programs, advise town agencies on resource
protection, participate in agriculture preservation and educate
local citizens. The Commission meets the first and third Thursday
of each month at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

The Department of Natural Resources enforces the rules and regulations
of hunting, fishing, shellfishing, and Wetlands Protection Act in
the town. The Department deals with marshland, docks, illegal dumping,
driving of recreational vehicles, parking and driving on the beach,
and wildlife management programs. A map of Dennis Conservation Areas
is available. The Department is involved in the local Waterfowl
Project, Freshwater Ponds Project, Coyote population count, and
dredging at the mouth of Swan River. The Department collects fees
for shellfishing licenses and the use of 4- Wheel drive vehicles
on beaches.

The Board of Health enforces the Massachusetts General Laws, the
state Sanitary Code, the state Environmental Code, and local health
regulations. This includes, but is not limited to, the location,
construction and repair of septic systems, hazardous material storage
and disposal, solid waste disposal, bathing water quality, private
water supplies, private wells, and non- community public water supplies.
The board regulates the use of pesticides/herbicides. The board
has programs to monitor septic tanks (random testing using computer
of individual systems), and to monitor underground storage tanks
(if 15 years or older). The board handles surface water sampling
and monitoring. Road runoff data is collected on certain surface
water areas to monitor high bacteria counts. The board handles licenses
and fees for septic trucks and systems, food establishments, garbage
trucks, etc.

Massachusetts General Laws requires coastal communities to have
Shellfish Constables who are trained and experienced in shellfish
management. Public safety is important when consuming the live perishable
product. The Shellfish Department is responsible for managing shellfish
resources with the town including recommendations for regulation,
propagation, and enforcement of town and state regulations pertaining
to shellfish. The Shellfish Department is involved in water quality
issues to protect shellfish resources and handles shellfish licenses.
Mr. Marcy also serves as a representative for the Town on the Coastal Resources Committee for Barnstable County.
