The Nantucket Land Bank Commission is a body politic and corporate and a public instrumentality created by a special act of the Mass. Legislature, Chapt. 669 of the Acts of 1983, as thereafter amended. Pursuant to this authority, the Land Bank is empowered to acquire important open space resources on Nantucket for the public, and to hold and manage parcels of land in a manner consistent with the natural, scenic, and open conditions thereof. The funds used by the Land Bank for these purposes are generated primarily from a two percent real estate transfer fee that the Land Bank is authorized to collect on transfers of real estate occurring within the County of Nantucket, subject to certain exemptions.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS: The Commission has provided the public with a diverse selection of open space opportunities on Nantucket spanning rare species protection to active recreation. To date, the Land Bank has acquired and manages 2,460 acres of land and protects another 105 acres through permanent conservation restrictions.

DESCRIPTION: The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is a land-use planning agency working with the USDA, primarily in agriculture. It is also involved in water conservation, water irrigation management, water quality, storm water management, dune stabilization and restoration, soils information and verification, and wetlands delineation. Growers, including cranberries, private land owners, and town conservation commissions, health departments, and planning boards all use the services of the NRCS.

The SouthEastern Massachusetts Aquaculture Center (SEMAC) is a regional center established to assist the aquaculture industry, private and public, within southeastern Massachusetts. The overall mission of SEMAC is to identify and respond to industry needs, both present and future. The center's initiatives include: resource network, technical assistance, training, educational programs, research and development, business promotion, and marketing.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS: Industry Support and Technical Assistance: Growers are able to request funds for assistance in emergency disease diagnosis and assistance for advanced training. The objectives of the Sanctuary are to provide enhanced resource protection through conservation and management that complements existing regulatory authorities; to support, promote, and coordinate scientific research on, and monitoring of, the site-specific marine resources of the sanctuary; to enhance public awareness, understanding, appreciation, and wise use of the marine environment; and to facilitate multiple uses of the sanctuary to the extent compatible with the primary objective of resource protection.

Conducts earth science research and mapping investigations of the U.S. continental margins. Areas of study include the U.S. Atlantic Coast, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, Great Lakes, and Polar Regions. Research focuses on four themes: environmental quality and preservation, natural hazards and public safety, natural resources, and public information. Current topics of study include coastal erosion, polluted sediments, gas hydrates, and coastal effects from global climate change. Results of these studies are released to the public in many different types of media such as reports, fact sheets, and maps. Professional scientists, decision-makers, and the general public commonly use this information.

PUBLICATIONS: Publications, brochures, maps, and education materials on science projects at the Center are available upon request.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS: The USGS Woods Hole Science Center offers advisory services and releases study results to the public electronically via the Internet and upon request. Tours of the Center and the laboratories are available by special arrangement. Employees at the Center are also involved in numerous outreach activities in the local schools and beyond.

WBNERR is one of 26 areas designated as part of a Federal-State (NOAA/MA DCR) venture. The focus is on education, estuarine research, and resource protection. The Reserve Headquarters is on 23 acres at the old Sargent Estate. The Reserve encompasses 2700 acres including Washburn Island, South Cape Beach, parcels along the Quashnet and Childs Rivers and Abigail Brook. The Reserve promotes on-site research on such topics as nutrient transport in groundwater and impacts on ecosystem, various topics relating to estuarine ecology and coastal dynamics. Research results are used to educate policymakers, teachers, and other members of the community about coastal zone issues.

The Woods Hole Sea Grant program supports research, education, and extension projects that encourage environmental stewardship, long-term economic development, and responsible use of the nation’s coastal and ocean resources. It is part of the National Sea Grant College Program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a network of 30 individual programs located in each of the coastal and Great Lakes states. Together, these programs form a national network of over 300 participating institutions involving more than 3,000 scientists, engineers, educators, students, and outreach experts.

The NMFS Laboratory monitors and regulates marine fishery ecosystems on the New England and mid-Atlantic shelves. The Aquarium promotes public awareness of these activities and a better understanding and appreciation of the fisheries stocks and the marine environment. On display are live exhibits of local marine species including those of commercial and recreational importance.
