The Land Bank purchases land on Martha's Vineyard to protect the
Island's traditional landscapes, to manage their natural resources,
and to encourage public access where and when possible. Nearly three
thousand acres have been conserved since 1986; no entrance fee is
charged. The Land Bank Commission, a public body comprising an elected
member from each Vineyard town plus an appointed representative
of the Commonwealth, oversees the agency's activities.

A non-profit organization comprised of the shellfish departments
from five Martha's Vineyard towns. The Shellfish Group has tax deductible
status as a Massachusetts corporation. The Group seeks to preserve
and expand the Island's traditional shellfisheries, a very important
renewable resource. This program of community resource management
includes the application of innovative aquaculture technology for
improvement of the Island's historically viable shellfish industry.

The goal of MCZM is to protect natural resources in the coastal
zone while promoting responsible economic development. MCZM implements
the approved Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management Program, which
consists of 27 policies concerned with coastal land and water management,
port and harbor development, water quality, recreation, public access,
coastal development, etc. MCZM manages the Coastal Facilities Improvement
Program grants and Harbor Management program, and jointly administers,
along with the U.S. EPA, the Buzzards Bay Project and Mass. Bay/Cape
Cod Bay Program.

The Sandwich State Fish Hatchery is operated by the state Division
of Fisheries and Wildlife to supply trout for stocking area ponds
and rivers. The hatchery has been operated by the state since 1912
and raises rainbow, brook, brown, and hybrid tiger trout (brook
trout x brown trout cross). The hatchery maintains its own broodstock
and hatching house. A section of the hatchery is open to the general
public along with a small interpretive kiosk. Tours can be arranged
for organized groups.

OTHER INFORMATION: Free admission. A handful of fish food is available
from a vending machine for a quarter. Feeding the fish is very popular
with the kids.

The Southeast Wildlife District is the regional office of the state
Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. The district is responsible
for the management of the inland fisheries and wildlife resources
of the area in conjunction with staff from the Westboro field headquarters
and the Boston office. The district office provides information
and technical assistance on freshwater recreational fishing, hunting,
nuisance animal control, general wildlife questions, general freshwater
ecology questions, habitats, and related subjects. The district
land protection agent coordinates land acquisitions for the Department's
habitat protection program.

The State Lobster Hatchery is responsible for stocking the coastal
waters of Massachusetts with lobsters. It also conducts research

The Association provides a forum for coastal municipalities' shellfish

with the Mass. Div. of Marine Fisheries and provides input to legislators

HOURS: Refuge is open dawn to dusk (a 3/4-mile trail winds through
a variety of coastal habitats); visitor contact station and bookstore
is open seasonally. Call ahead for hours of operation and an activity
schedule.
The refuge provides a feeding, resting, and nesting area for migratory
waterfowl, colonial seabirds, and shorebirds. Monomoy Refuge is
part of the 94 million acre National Wildlife Refuge System administered
by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior.
The Refuge has long been a favorite destination for birders. Visitors
also enjoy hiking, fishing, photography, wildlife observation, and
guided natural history tours.
