Scenic - Floodlights II

Once darkness set in, as the Healy rumbled along through the newly forming ice, I was ready to pack it in. It had been a long day, and I was frozen from unsucessfully watching for bears up on the bow. In the main lab the security monitor had a view looking forward from the aloft conn, and I was amazed by what I saw--two huge beams of light casting these monstrous eye-shapes onto the ice ahead. I put my jacket back on and hiked up to the deck just on top of the bridge. Sure enough, the view was amazing. I positioned myself just underneath the starboard light and shot down on the bow and the ice ahead. I was amazed at how the starboard beam showed up so crisply but the port beam was all but invisible. I didn't get to sleep until about 3am the following morning. (note that I'm not the only crazy one watching the ice break at midnight--if you look closely you can see two figures in the very bow of the ship...)
