INTRODUCTION

The Mass Spectrometry and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometry Facility primarily serves members of the W.H.O.I. Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry, but is available to all investigators at the Institution and, as time and resources permit, to other researchers outside of the Woods Hole community. The Facility provides specialized, state-of-the-art analytical services using instruments which would be prohibitively expensive for any single investigator to develop, operate and maintain.

The Facility is governed by a Users Committee which sets policies and determines long term plans. Since 1982, the Facility has been located in Fye Laboratory on the Institution’s Quisset Campus. The Facility is structured as a Cost Center fully supported by fees charged for analyses. As a cost center, the Facility may neither make nor lose money on a yearly basis. Each year, a standard rate is projected based on past experience and expected use. Any surplus or deficit at the end of each year must be redistributed to, or made up from, projects based on the pro-rated work performed.

For more information on this year’s provisional rate, please contact Carl Johnson at (508) 289-2304.
