You're nearing the end of your first semester in the Joint Program and you're ready to prepare your first scientific paper for publication. What do you need to do? What happens after you submit? What are the responsibilities of the journal editor? The reviewers? What is an anonymous review and why would anyone ever write one? What do you do once the editor renders a decision? In the seminar on 11/23/04, we will talk about the submission and review processes that lead to a scientific journal publication. Before class, select a scientific journal you read often, one to which you are likely to submit a paper in the future. On the journal's web site, find and read what is often referred to as the "Instructions for Authors." Also, read here part of the debate over anonymous vs. signed reviews. Come prepared to voice your opinion on the subject. Finally, we will discuss the move toward open access in scientific literature, a topic you are likely to see hotly debated in the next several years. MBL/WHOI library staff have prepared a web page on this subject, with links to resources you may find useful as the debate progresses. You can access the web page here: Open Access and the Research Scientist. |
