Genomics in Marine Sciences
The WHOI Science Foundation (WSF) requests proposals
for research employing genomic information or approaches to address important
questions in marine science, including biological oceanography and marine
biology as well as any other relevant areas of marine science.
I. Proposal guidelines:
Proposals are to be prepared in NSF format (see sample
proposals in Redfield 2-06 and NSF
Grant Proposal Guide). Suggested length of the proposal text is
8-10 pages (12 pt, single-spaced), including figures and tables but excluding
references, budget, and budget justification. Proposals exceeding 10 pages
will not be reviewed (or graded).
II. Suggested sections of the proposal (and recommended lengths) include:
- Project summary (required; half-page, single spaced)
- Background and rationale (~3 pages)
- Approach, experimental design and methods (~4 pages)
- Broader impacts (~1 page)
- References cited
- Budget (see Excel spreadsheet format). The maximum allowable budget is $150,000.00 (US) per year, total costs (direct plus indirect), for up to 3 years.
- Budget justification (~1 page). (Tell us who
will do what, and why you need each item in your budget.)
III. Important dates:
March 4: Submit letter of intent including brief description of topic. Done. Thank you.
March 18: Submit outline of proposal, including Specific Aims
April 16: Proposals due (5 PM). Please submit original
and four copies.
IV. Proposal review:
Each proposal will be reviewed by at least two faculty members and two students. For the panel discussion of each proposal, one student will serve as primary reviewer and another student as secondary reviewer. The primary reviewer will present the proposal, providing first a summary of the proposal background, aims, and experimental approaches, followed by a critique (strengths and weaknesses). The secondary reviewer will then provide a critique (strengths and weaknesses). (Primary and secondary reviewers are not to discuss their assigned proposal in advance of the panel meeting!) All other students will serve as panelists, and will be responsible for adding additional comments or asking questions of the primary and secondary reviewers. Each proposal will be allotted up to 15 minutes for discussion.
Applicants will be notified of the results of the panel
deliberations twelve weeks after the panel meeting. (just
kidding)
