Crocosphaera is a diazotropic
marine cyanobacterium that has been isolated from the both the tropical Atlantic
and Pacific Oceans. Recent work has shown that unicellular nitrogen
fixers (like Crocosphaera), that fix N2 during the night,
are significantly contribuing to "new" nitrogen to the tropical oceans.
We have been informed that the Department of Energy/Joint Genome Institute
(DOE/JGI)
are going the sequence the entire genome of Crocosphaera sp.
WH8501.
There are many projects onging in the lab studying the characteristics and
physiology of this important marine nitrogen fixer. |
